As several studies show, there is a strong economic link between the health and well being of the local economy, tourism, and these recreational and natural areas we have adopted. The below  facts are just a few points on why, from an economic perspective these areas should be maintained and preserved! There is literally a multimillion dollar correlation between tourism, nature, recreation, and these beloved areas we are maintaining. Here are a few points to ponder:

-In a 2016 report conducted for NOAA's Office of Coastal Management it was proven that the ocean industry impacted the Puerto Rican economy $798,495,848 annually. As a matter of fact, it was stated that some towns are “almost entirely dependent on tourism”.

-According to the Puerto Rico Planning Board, approximately 3.2 million people visited Puerto Rico in 2014 as tourists who participated in a variety of activities including boating, fishing, snorkeling, surfing, kite sailing, beach lounging, visiting historical sites, and nature parks.

-The World Travel and Tourism Council found that in 2014, “travel and tourism sector contributed $7.42 billion to the Puerto Rican economy", approximately 7.3% of the territories GDP.

-In a study conducted by a Duke University economist, “Surfonomics Quantifies the Worth of Waves” published in August 24, 2012, it was found that surf tourism was a multimillion dollar asset to the local economy of Rincon town and despite the stereotype most surfers were an average of 34 years old and made approximately $75,000 annually.

These facts are just a few points on why, from an economic perspective these areas should be maintained and preserved! There is literally a multimillion dollar correlation between tourism, nature, recreation, and these beloved areas we are maintaining.
