Punta Borinquen and the Northwest coast of Puerto Rico is one of the last virgin areas of this size and scope on the island. It is virtually free of concrete, pollution, and “luminous contamination” (electrical lights). These factors not only affect the interior land but also the shoreline and ocean wildlife as well, i.e. endangered turtle hatchlings. There are several ecological studies regarding this area which inform us of the 6 distinct ecosystems to be found here: the grasslands, the palm groves, the shoreline, the thicket/brush, the forest and the wetlands.
Vision
In this region, there have been over 257 species of wildlife identified, several of which were found to be either of "critical importance" or “endangered” as defined under the Endangered Species Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act, Migratory Bird Act, and or Puerto Rican Heritage Committee. One of the largest and most diverse groups of wildlife found, were birds with 57 species. There are also three species of critically threatened coral and four species of endangered or protected trees and shrubs also found in the area. Other sightings include three species of endangered marine reptiles and potentially the Puerto Rican Boa.
