History
Mission
There are also three distinct historical and archeological periods these areas encompass: Pre-Columbian (Taino 430 BC- 1493), Spanish Colonial(1493-1898), and the United States "American Imperial"(1898-1952) periods.
Pre-Colombian
Before the conquests of Columbus, these areas were dwellings for the Taino native inhabitants of the island. To this day, in certain areas, you can take a stroll and find pottery shards on the ground that go back to this time. Many archaeological studies of the area going back to the 1920’s reinforce this.
Spanish Colonial
The second archeological and historical period pertaining to Punta Borinquen can be observed with the Spanish Colonial Light House. Built in 1889, this emblematic structure like the rest of the area was completely abandoned and in decay until Rescate Playas Borinquen took over and adopted the area. Despite our best efforts, Hurricane Maria (2017) did significant structural damage, but after consultation with a restoration specialist there is hope for the future!
American Imperial
The lands of Punta Borinquen originally belonged to Ramey Air Force Base that was operational from 1940 through 1971. It is said that these areas were a favorite of President Eisenhower who would come frequently on the weekends to engage in recreational activities such as golf and beach visits.
